Selyne (Liu)

Personality :

A dual soul, Selyne is as discreet when unnoticed as she is sociable when attention turns to her. Like
her stones, her energy reserves must be recharged when depleted, and the same goes for her quota
of socializing. Fully charged, she radiates motivation and determination, carried by a good mood
and an infectious optimism ! Exhausted, she resembles a small grey soul drained of its substance,
unable to speak or react to the world around her. But after a good night’s sleep (at least 10 hours),
she is back to her cheerful self once again !

Fortunately, these states of exhaustion only occur occasionally, for Selyne is as enduring as she is
resilient, despite the fragility and nonchalance her small frame and roundness might suggest. One
will quickly realize that she is a solid, energetic, and determined shiji ! And quite stubborn… but
never to the point of stubbornly pursuing a path while ignoring her mistakes, which she will humbly
acknowledge when they are pointed out to her. Selyne is also patient, meticulous, and curious—
qualities that have allowed her to grow and never tire of her chosen field : the marvelous world of
gems !

She is deeply invested in her work, but no less so in her relationships, for she is a generous soul—
perhaps a little too much so… This often leads to her being used without realizing it and then
discarded like an old, depleted gem once she is no longer needed. Yet those who treat her in this
way are permanently erased from her circle of friends. For if Selyne has learned one lesson through
her many cycles, it is that it is not worth cluttering oneself with hypocritical ties. While she does not
forgive betrayal easily, her heart has not closed over the years despite false friendships, and she
loves helping people deeply—hence her hobby as a lithotherapist.

Years and experience have also taught her to better know herself and to fully embrace what truly
matters in her eyes : expressing her creativity, cherishing her independence, respecting her own
needs, and safeguarding her inner peace while surrounding herself with genuine people. And if that
balance were ever threatened—for herself or those dear to her—she would do everything in her
power to fight against it and restore the peace and harmony so hard-won for her generation and
those to come.

Backstory :

800 years of life is long, but not so old for a shiji who had the good fortune to be born in a time of
peace. For Selyne belongs to the post-war generation. A strange era, that of a Shengdao still scarred
by the aftermath of the conflicts that had nearly torn it apart for good. Landscapes, hearts, and
bodies alike were deeply wounded in those days, and much still needed to be rebuilt amid a climate
of uncertainty about the future of the survivors. It was in this shaken world that little Selyne was
born, into a diminished and fragile family, yet one that remained close-knit nonetheless.
And since there was rebuilding to be done and an urgent need to improve living conditions for all,
magical gems became an important resource to exploit and study. The Gem Shijis were called upon
for this task. As specialists of crystals and living reservoirs of their power, many of them were
encouraged to work in underground or open-pit crystal mines. It was there that Selyne’s
professional career began—quite literally in a crystal quarry. From that moment on, her life
revolved entirely around gems. From lapidary and miner, she became a gemologist and later a
merchant dealing in precious stones.

As the cycles passed, her expertise in the field grew to the point where she was taken on by a
craftsman to begin training as a jeweler and goldsmith during her third cycle. This eventually led
her to become a crystal restorer in her fourth cycle, at a time when shijis were beginning to master
the use of the magic they could contain. As her fascination with minerals only deepened, she
realized just how much she loved creating. Thus, at the start of her sixth cycle, she chose to pursue
her knowledge further by joining the ranks of the gem enchanters.

Today, she finally gives free rein to her creativity, offering her services in the Stardance Oasis as a
professional gem enchanter and, in her spare time, an ornamental artisan. Need to brighten up your
home with “flame-gems” for a warm atmosphere or “soft-gems” for a more subdued glow ? A
precious memory you’d like to preserve, or a melody you’d love to hear again at leisure through
“memory-gems” ? (Also quite useful for oral note-taking—not everyone enjoys writing, after all.)
“Light-Gem,” “Cooling-Gem”… these enchantments hold no more secrets for Selyne, who has
finally opened her own little shop, where she also offers lithotherapy sessions to discerning clients.

Oh, and as for love—Selyne long hoped to cross paths with her soulmate, but without success. Of
course, she has known more than one romance in her long life, but, strangely enough, nothing ever
truly serious. Perhaps the fact that she never managed to give life played a part in that. In any case,
she no longer expects much from that side of life and has resigned herself to the idea that the shiji
destined for her may well have perished during the great Elder War
