(Over)Water Fight !

[Notes : This text was co-written with Sylvirr in the form of an RP !
Vashaa inspired us with her roleplay-style campaign, and we wanted to play a Water Fight in the form of a tabletop-style game, using dice rolls to determine the winner !

The system worked as follows : we used a d10 to determine whether actions succeeded or failed. The player with the highest roll wins ! The fight takes place over 3 rounds, and whoever wins the most rounds wins the fight!
Rules :

  • One player rolls to attack, while the other rolls to dodge or block.
  • The players take turns attacking, except in the case of a critical failure or critical success.
  • The highest roll determines whether the attack succeeds or is dodged/blocked.

There we go, I hope that's clear !
We hope you’ll enjoy your reading and have fun with it ! <3 ]

(OVER) WATER FIGHT :
HAO VS STORGE

Balanced perfectly on a single leg, perched atop his wooden post, Hao waited for Nia to announce the beginning of the fight that would pit him against his son-in-law. When he had written his name on the Water Fight board for participants looking for an opponent, he hadn’t been surprised for a single second to see Storge write his name directly opposite his and volunteer to take up the challenge. It was the perfect opportunity to test him and make sure he was still as capable of protecting his son.

After one final stretch, he assumed a fighting stance and raised a hand toward Storge, signaling that he was waiting for him with a smile full of the flamboyant confidence that characterized him so well.

“ Let’s see if you’ve still got it and have kept training seriously, son-in-law. Come at me ! ”

The invitation was clear. Hao was letting him make the first move and stood ready to face him.

Storge, as gentle as he was, was a nurse. He was a NURSE, damnit. Buuuutt everybody had their other side. Haru knew of it, and suggested Storge stay p to date on his techniques. And while Haru was a bit clumsy at it, Storge was...generally keen. He was dressed in an adorable set of swim trunks that seemed to follow along his general habit of wearing ugly things that really had no business being made, but oh well. He waded into the water somewhat, and nodded. Too far away for his damaged voice to be heard so...nodding would be his communication for how.

Hao watched his son-in-law enter the water with a deeply perplexed expression. Had he misunderstood the rules of this fight ? The boy wasn't exactly simple-minded, so perhaps his mind had been elsewhere when they were explained ? Cupping both hands around his snout, he then shouted at him :

" Hooooy, boy ! You're supposed to get ABOVE the water, not IN the water. Get on your pole and hurry up and start the hostilities, or I'll come over there and get you myself ! "

Hao wanted to be prepared to fall, okay ?! Storge climbed his way on the pole--ugh, his balance was not the best. He was way too thick and beefy for this ! But at least he saved himself the shame of the shock of cold water.

Okay ! Here we go ! Hopefully he could get the hang of it...quickly.

ROUND 1 :

ATTACK ROLL FOR STORGE : 10

Storge took a moment to compose himself and shake himself out of his usual default. His default was 'I am a nurse, and I am nice'. He took some time to shut that part of his brain down, found his balance, and made his way across the poles with surprising speed, going for a sharp and sudden low-sweep to the feet. His balance was...surprisingly good, when he was focusing. Lock in, Storge !

DODGE ROLL FOR HAO : 2

When he saw Storge finally decide to climb onto his post, balancing rather precariously, Hao’s smile widened across his muzzle. Finally ! The little rascal had certainly kept him waiting ! But that smile quickly vanished when, in the blink of an eye, he found himself sent flying into the water, without even knowing how. He had lowered his gaze for barely the span of a wingbeat to avoid being blinded by a ray of sunlight, and that had been enough for Storge to swoop down on him…

“ Nice one, son-in-law… You really caught me off guard. The whole ‘forgetting the rules’ thing was just to distract me, wasn’t it ? Admit it. ”

He let out a genuine laugh as he got back to his feet, soaking wet back and tail, gave him a little salute, and jumped back onto a post.

“ But you won’t catch me with little tricks like that twice… ”

ROUND 1 : Storge Wins !

ROUND 2 :

ATTACK ROLL FOR HAO : 5

The martial arts master’s gaze then flared with intensity, while his face settled into an expression of perfect neutrality and concentration. He then launched himself toward his opponent, jumping from post to post in a series of quick, controlled leaps, before propelling himself into a spin and extending his leg at the very last second in an attempt to strike Storge in the shoulders, ready to sweep him off with his tail if that wasn’t enough to make him fall.

DODGE ROLL FOR STORGE : 1

Storge barely had a moment to regain his own footing before Hao was back up and coming at him with several rapid strikes. His own balance was quickly thrown off and rather than falling ino the water--which would have been less embarassing--he instead stumbled back, caught himself on the post behind him--aaaannndd ended up toppling backwards flat across the posts and knocking the wind right out of himself. Which..was actually pretty comical, all things considered.

Storge tried to get back to his feet--but the posts were algae-coated and slick, and regaining his footing was difficult. Even so, he tried to get his legs under him so his arms could be used to block and retaliate whatever Hao may have thrown out at him. Unfortunately, it was a somewhat clumsy attempt, but he wasn't going to admit that...yet.

As he watched him, looking a little perplexed as he struggled to remain perched on his—or rather, his two—posts, Hao had refrained from delivering the final blow that would send his opponent tumbling into the water. He grimaced, gritting his teeth at first when he saw Storge literally slam into both posts. That had to hurt...

Then he watched him begin some sort of desperate contortion act to keep from falling.
And that... was too much for him. He couldn't help but let out a small, teasing laugh.
Well, it was time to put an end to his suffering. With the tip of his tail, he gave Storge a little push to finally send him tumbling into the water once and for all.

ROUND 2 : Hao Wins !

Then he held out a hand to help him back up and declared :

" Nice try, but not very effective. Come on, son-in-law, shall we do this again ? "

Once Storge had regained his balance and was firmly in position on his post for the final round, Hao let go and jumped back onto his own post.

" Do me the honor of opening this final dance ! "

He invited the scarred Shiji to attack.

ROUND 3 :

ATTACK ROLL FOR STORGE : 2

The stars were not aligned for Storge today. The slippery pole seemed to want nothing more than his downfall today, since as he moved to advance for another attack, he...missed. Perhaps it was his lack of depth perception, what with being blind in one eye. Perhaps it was the algae, the salt in the air, or--more likely-- he was just not doing well today. He never did well in front of an audience. He was a nurse, after all ! At least it was a comical showing.

DOGE ROLL FOR HAO : 5

Hao could clearly tell that his opponent wasn't comfortable, and it was showing in his attacks. Hesitant, increasingly slower, and even a little clumsy. Had the idea of fighting on posts been too much ? Was Storge just having a bad day ? In any case, this was clearly not the best performance his son-in-law had given him. That was why Hao easily dodged this new attack, leaning back just enough to avoid it.

Now it was his turn to counterattack. Hopefully Storge would be ready this time !

ATTACK ROLL FOR HAO : 10

Quickly switching posts to throw his opponent off, Hao then thrust his right fist forward, aiming for the solar plexus, though with his palm open to avoid hurting him.

DODGE ROLL FOR STORGE : 7

In truth, this was not Storge's best time. But that was fine! He didn't really want to be known for his prowess in any way--except for how good he was at taking care of people. Haru could vouch for that, with how clumsy his darling little lover was. That said, Storge didn't manage to dodge this one--though he wasn't very graceful on the posts anyway. While he managed to avoid the hit to the solar plexus with a well timed dodge, it wasn't enough to entirely save him and--whoops-- also tried to switch posts and ended up plopping right into the water.

KER-PLAP.

...Well, at least it was shallow.

ROUND 3 : Hao Wins !

The martial arts master had held his breath in a burst of excitement when he saw Storge dodge his strike to the solar plexus. But his delight was short-lived, and he let out a small sigh of disappointment when he saw his son-in-law go tumbling down and land on his butt in the water, wearing that loud pair of shorts that only he would dare to wear.

Although, disappointment was perhaps a bit of a strong word. Storge had had the guts to challenge him, and he had even managed to knock him into the water once, which was no small feat ! Quite an accomplishment for a novice like him, in fact ! That being said, it didn't mean Hao would let him slack off, given the situation. After all, he had become the guardian of his son's well-being.

He jumped into the water and went to help Storge back to his feet for a second time, wearing a friendly expression.

" There's some work to do on your balance, boy. But as far as speed goes, I've got nothing to complain about. And you've certainly got guts, taking on the challenge of fighting your martial-arts-master father-in-law. Thanks for the fight, Storge. I'm counting on you to come train at the dojo from time to time, alright ? "

He gave his son-in-law's hand a firm, deliberate squeeze, making it perfectly clear that he was counting on him to look after Haru's happiness—and that he wouldn't tolerate him failing at it. He then escorted him back to the beach while explaining what had gone wrong with his technique, before handing him back over to Haru and turning toward Nia and her own companion.

" You're next ! I'm waiting for you ! "

Winner of this fight : Hao !

Who is next ? :3

The End

When Hao put his name down on the Water Fights participant board, he never imagined for a second that Storge would take up the challenge. And his son-in-law himself probably hadn't expected it either...
